Radical Volunteering in the Austin Community

JUNE 26, 2017

We put our employees first at Square Root. We walk the walk by embracing a culture that ranges from knitting, where we showcase our unique talents and interests to supporting outside-of-work achievements all the way to watching and cheering as our COO hiked the Pacific Crest trail.

Recently, the Radicals took some time off from their packed schedules and dove into the Austin community to see how they could give back. Volunteers spent the day mulching, weeding, trail-clearing, washing, petting, and summer camping. How did they participate in such a wide variety of tasks, you ask? By working with three incredible non-profits: Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Austin Humane Society, and Any Baby Can.

The Ladybird Wildflower Center seeks to “…restore and create healthy, beautiful landscapes… to provide water quality, provide habitat for wildlife, and enhance human health and happiness.” In its conservation quest, Radicals helped by tending the mulching, weeding, and building gardening installations, ultimately aiding in protecting the beautiful and sustainable nature presence in our beautiful city!

The Austin Humane Society is “the largest no-kill, not profit pet and adoption center in Austin” and they are so successfully run in large part because of volunteers from across the city. The Square Root Radicals were excited to play a small part in helping maintain the AHS mission. The volunteers washed dogs big and small, putting smiles on the faces of all humans and canines involved!

Any Baby Can is an Austin nonprofit that seeks to “…strengthen parents and their children through in-home therapies, resource navigation, and family support services.” Part of supporting families is hosting Camp Grey Dovea week designed for kids who have siblings with cancer and we were thrilled to help them in the camp’s preparation! We created name tags, organized camper backpacks, and helped get everything ready for registration.

These nonprofits are just a few of the awesome ways the city of Austin cares for its people (and dogs).
