Square Root is the only small business in the Austin-metro area included on the list, this award recognizes their strong culture and performance.

AUSTIN, September 18, 2014 – Great Place to WorkCoEFFICIENT named Square Root, an Austin based technology startup, one of the best small workplaces in the United States on their annual 2014 Best Small and Medium Workplaces list, published today in FORTUNE magazine. Divided into two categories, small (24-250 employees) and medium (251-999 employees), is the only small business on the list in the Austin-metro area, and only one of three small businesses to be ranked in the state of Texas.

According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses employ more than 55 percent of the country’s private workforce, outnumbering corporations by more than 1,000 to 1. With the growing number of small businesses starting every day, the competition to earn a spot on this exclusive list is steep. Companies making the list have perks similar to the largest corporations in the U.S. However, these small companies have one big difference: they each have under 1,000 employees. Providing great perks, excellent culture, and exciting work can be difficult in a small company—but has overcome that challenge with an exceptional team.

“Building a small company takes a lot of focus and drive, but building a great small company takes an incredible group of people. Ranking 15th on this year’s list is an astounding achievement for all of us,” said CEO Chris Taylor. “‘Thrive’ is one of the core values of Square Root. We believe that along with all of the hard work it takes to scale a small company, it is vital for everyone to achieve balance, personal growth, and enjoy coming to work. Being placed on this prestigious list shows that our team is indeed thriving.”

Taylor also notes that the people at are a big part of the success they’ve seen. “A lot of startups and small businesses come and go, but our team is what makes us successful and a great place to work. In just a few years, we’ve grown beyond what I could have imagined, and together we’ve developed a great product and an excellent company to work for.”

With their flagship product, CoEFFICIENT®, the team is changing the way large retail and franchise organizations leverage data. The SaaS platform uses data science to provide in-depth analysis for every member of the organization, from the corporate level down to individuals stores. In 2015, the company aims to increase revenue by 50 percent, triple customer count, and launch the CoEFFICIENT® platform in new industries.

As the company grows, there is a focus on keeping the same culture that made Square Root a great company in the first place. Taylor still holds weekly company-wide town hall style meetings to provide updates on the state of the business, sits down individually with each employee every quarter, and gives weekly awards to top performers. Square Root also has a results-only work environment where employees are encouraged to take time off when they need it, not just because they’ve accrued it.

Competing against hundreds of companies across the country, participated in a rigorous selection process, which included an employee survey and an in-depth questionnaire about benefits programs and company practices. Great Place to Work evaluates each application using its unique methodology based on five dimensions of a great workplace: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.
